Almost six months since anyone has posted here. I have a gut feeling that most guys who indicate interest in gi sport on their profiles, actually do not engage in such and are "padding" the profile. Locally on this site, have come across only one man into judo or other gi sport; and I was not his "type" (read: not sexy enough) to go gi vs gi.
U may be right but I claim exception.I do jiujitsu 5 days a week...at the closest location to where I live we do gi Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri and no-gi Wed. At the HQ location near downtown they have both each night back to back Mon thru Fri..Sat/Sun there is open mat and each grappler does as he or she chooses (it is co-ed) ..best way I tell is to look in people's photos that they are in a public location such as a gym, tourney site, or similar.Due my collegiate wrestling background I do have a preference for no-gi but I go with the flow at my dojo. Thanks
I suspect that "padding the profile" in terms of the martial arts is more of a USA thing than a western Europe thing. The cat is let out of the bag when a guy who says he's into the martial but (1) does not have a gi (2) does not know what a gi is (3) not interested in using one of my extras.
I like the idea of using a gi even for training a new guy at wrestling and with no falling/breakfall experience; as a matter of safety to better control the direction and intensity of his fall – safer for both him and me how he lands.
Interesting about the use of a gi here...what is noticeable is that the gi game is definitely different than the gi game..the grips are the big thing..where using the gi for techniques is a main part of jiujitsu with the gi, in no gi jiujitsu grabbing clothing is illegal except if you are wearing gi pants (the reason why this is allowed is interesting but would take a long paragraph to explain) . Best cushion for falling is to use mats..if you live in a large enough city they have free or low cost open mats would be the safest place to learn and practice..thanks
It may be easiest to find an already existing event that has brackets for seniors as some of the larger wrestling and jiujitsu tourneys seem to have. Some cannot afford cross country travel expense. Also various cities have free or low cost open mat sessions that anyone may attend.
Seems that locally, the men on this site want only experienced at judo (so they tell me). Duh? Everyone is inexperienced at some time in life; and one's never too young or too old to begin, whenever.
OTOH, I have never had a meetup or even a hint of a possible meetup who is interested in judo or any of the other gi sports. I have a gut feeling that we are an extremely rare breed on the site. Two possibles are (1) gi reduces skin contact; and let's face reality about Internet sites (2) folks really into gi sports (and can get along without the "benefits") get their fill at mainstream brick 'n' mortar local establishments dealing with these sports. [I would also, if the nearby ones were not so damn costly to use. Almost a decade ago, one I attended charged almost $1,000 for six months of instruction/action – an untenable amount even then.] As with wrestling, the low-cost options are not aimed at adults – primarily aimed at school-age children and youth.
It is unfortunate that combat sports are getting too expensive. The main reason for the higher cost is that these facilities provide instruction; however, that being said there is a wide range of pricing. My place in Las Vegas is mainly jiujitsu and charges $150 the first month, then $110/month on auto-pay but those members who started when the rate was lower have their rate grand fathered in, in my case was always $100. Also, in my dojo if you get hurt or sick they place your membership on suspension without even having to ask, just letting them know. No contracts at my place other than signing a waiver. There is a significant price differences between dojos, eve in the same city, partly due to quality, their expenses, and what they offer. If you live in a major city suggest shopping around. I strongly suggest that you talk with the instructors rather than the membership chairperson as they will usually be much more in tune with your desires at the gym. Hope this helps. Thanks
Actually I almost joined one of those 'brick 'n' mortar' places within a 2.5 mile walk from here. Close call, tho, that I didn't make it over there at the time. I would have pre-paid one of their required contracts and been f***ed when they suddenly shut down a month later
Hi, Spruceman,
Be sure to bring your gi with you to Wrestlefest later this month. If you don't have room to pack it, let me know and I can bring along an extra. I'll be really happy to do some judo with you there, since you're correct that it's hard to find people on here who are into gi sports. I suspect that you're right with your two reasons that there's so few guys into gi wrestling on here.
As for the high cost of training that you mention, you might want to look at College Park Judo Club, which meets at the Community Center in College Park, Maryland. They're a good club, and are also organized as a non-profit, so fees are reasonable ($20/month) according to their website. There's also Hui-O Judo at the Beltsville Community Center ($15/month) in Beltsville, MD. Both are well-respected clubs that are members of the Shufu Yudanshakai.

Hashbock: Thank you so much for the message. At this time, it looks like I might not be able to make it to the July 'Fest. I should know within a few days; as if I can't make it, I need to give Terry adequate notice so he can allocate my sleeping space at his house to someone else. If I can make it, be it July and/or September, I will bring along a couple light-weight "training" gi (in case yet someone else there also wants to do some gi action.)
Interesting as to the reaction of so many guys to do anything involving a gi – almost TEOTWAWKI :) Personally, I love wearing the things. Maybe why I really dig doing rip wrestling wearing a suit jacket – kind of the same feeling grabbing the lapels and working him over – only difference is while I love ripping a suit jacket (with pre-weakened seams), I wouldn't want to harm a single stitch on a gi unnecessarily.
3 dan here. Always looking for other experienced judokas. Especially other American black belts. Specialist in shime waza but love all types of grappling, with or without a gi.
