I think it's a great idea, but I'd have my abs showing from just below the rib cage. My "sweet spot" is just above the naval, so punches tend to gravitate toward that area with more above the naval exposed. I'm also a fan of an open shirt, especially with the tails tied at around the solar plexus, tucked into belt loops or pulled through belt to keep it open to expose the gut as a most tempting target.

I think belly shirts or similar make the target area much more appealing than just being shirtless, as they draw the eye to the most punchable target.

I think the wearer needs to be in decent shape, with slender and/or well muscled abs. I don't bother exercising my abs because I actually want to feel punches as deeply as possible. I know some guys want to hammer away at really tough abs, or receive punches that have little effect, but other guys take a great deal of pleasure in sinking a fist deep into a gut like mine.

Belly shirts look really stupid on pot bellies though.
